A History of Poole Harbour by Boat
Resident Tony and his wife Pam used to sail around Poole when they were younger and owned their own boat, which they called ‟High Spirits.”
Tony and Pam have been looking forward to our Poole Harbour trip, this took us round Brownsea Island, Furzey Island, Green Island, Round Island and Long Island.
Tony shared some of his memories and history with us too. “Pam and I moored up at Brownsea Island one afternoon, we fell asleep and only just woke up in time to be able to sail off, due to the tide coming in!” Tony exclaimed! “Half an hour more and we would have been stuck there!” he continued. Tony told everyone that Poole is a large natural harbour and the coastline inside measures just under 100 miles. He also said that it was used by the Romans as an invasion port.
Tony has written his own memoirs and plotted history of Poole Harbour in a short essay which we are going to type up for him. So, watch this space for more interesting history coming into print soon!
Barrie and Jeanette enjoyed hearing all about the harbour too and was content to sit back with a cuppa and take in the scenery.
These trips are amazing and ran by the charity ‘Friends of the Dolphins’ which has been running now since the 1980s. Providing individuals with a disability boat trips around Poole Harbour.
A big thank you, we have had a lovely day!
