A Visit From Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
We had an incredible visit from Jenni Curiel and Kevin Pritchard, talented musicians from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
The residents absolutely adore the range of music they bring, from opera and ballet to classical pieces and West End musicals.
Thanks to the generous support and sponsorship from Tapper Funeral Service, these visits are free of charge. Jenni mesmerised us with her violin, while Kevin showcased his skills on the piano and even delighted us with his French Horn. We were treated to a beautiful repertoire that included Gershwin, enchanting ballet melodies, and captivating opera pieces.
During the performance, Kevin played his favourite aria from Puccini’s opera La Boheme, titled “Your Tiny Frozen Hands,” which is a tender love song from Act One. It was a heart-warming sight to witness Val and Bill, married for 72 years, holding hands throughout the performance.
There was a lot of clapping and toe-tapping, and Iris and Enid couldn’t resist dancing in their chairs when the melodies from Mary Poppins filled the room. Other residents joined in singing favourites like “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Feed the Birds.” Dennis was in his element, conducting with his whole being, feeling the music’s rhythms and expressing them through his body movements. His response to the music was truly captivating.
At The Aldbury, we have residents in the late stages of dementia who may find speaking and moving challenging. During the concert, it was heart-warming to witness the smiles on their faces and their feet tapping along. Music truly nourishes the soul, and over lunch, the residents couldn’t stop talking about the concert.
Companion Cara expressed, “The concert was an absolute joy. Kevin and Jenni were phenomenal. We had over 20 residents singing along, tapping their feet, and even conducting with their arms held high. Music therapy has so many benefits in our dementia care home, and we cherish every concert we have.” The Aldbury has subscribed to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Digital Library, and our residents and staff thoroughly enjoy watching performances. It’s an incredible way to bring joy to our hearts.
