National Tea Day

22 April 2023

There is nothing more classically British than an afternoon tea, which is why National Tea Day on April 21 is highly popular at The Aldbury.

We celebrated this day dedicated to tea-drinking with delightful scones, jam, and cream to complement our cuppa.

Since the 18th century, the United Kingdom has been one of the world’s largest consumers of tea. Initially a beverage enjoyed by the upper class in Europe, tea gradually permeated through all social classes, eventually becoming a widely consumed drink. It continues to hold significant importance in British culture and identity. While savouring our tea, my companion, Cara, shared historical facts and recited poems that celebrate our love for tea.

One particular favourite poem was ‘A Cup Of Tea’ by Annabel Shelia, and we joyfully sang along to Doris Day’s ‘Tea For Two.’ Enid and Valerie engaged in a lively discussion about whether it was proper to curl their little fingers inwards or lift them away from the cup’s handle.

Everyone agreed that tea tasted better with sugar, and we all enjoyed dunking digestive biscuits into our cups.
