Roll for a cause
Residents Joyce, Stella, Hobi, and Pip wished they could go bowling again.
The companionship team took them to the local bowling alley, and they had lots of fun. Stella and Joyce used to play in a local bowling club, and they never thought they could bowl again. They all had so much fun and expressed a desire to go bowling once a month.
Today, Joyce, Stella, Pip, and Hobi bowled for a great cause. They joined “Roll For A Cause” at Pelhams Bowls Club with one of our other Colten Care homes, Fernhill.
The afternoon included bowling, bowls, and target games to fundraise in support of the Rotary Clubs in Wimborne and Gros Islet, in memory of their Chairman, Peter Douch.
Tickets were £10 each, which included fun bowls, tuition sessions, a posh afternoon tea, and a raffle.
The Aldbury has connections with the Douch family, who have very kindly donated our winter knits (hand warmers and blankets) during their knit & natter sessions to keep us warm and toasty over the winter.
Pip couldn’t stop smiling and looked very excited during her turn at bowls, with a whole cheering group behind her. Stella spoke to one of the volunteers named Chris about her times at her local bowls club, sharing stories about being left-handed and winning most of the games. Joyce did very well, rolling her ball the closest to the target and looking like a pro. Hobi concentrated hard, which was evident from his expression. He followed clear instructions from companion Melissa Mel, bending his knees and rolling the ball. Hobi cheered for himself after taking his shot, proud of his effort.
One of the Pelhams Bowls members gave a speech during our afternoon tea. He said, “Thank you to everyone for joining us today and helping us raise money for the Rotary Club. It was amazing to see everyone, especially the first-timers (looking at our table), who made an extraordinary effort to take part and have a go!” The Aldbury care home received applause and cheers from everyone as we were leaving!
Everyone was very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Thank you very much to Pelhams Bowls Club and the Douch Family Fundraiser.
Companion Melissa asked the residents to describe the afternoon in one word. Joyce exclaimed, “Wonderful!” and Stella said, “Wunderbar!”
