When a loved one is living with dementia, finding a care home that feels safe, supportive, and genuinely caring is essential. At The Aldbury, we provide personalised dementia care that prioritises each resident’s well-being, dignity, and quality of life.
Our compassionate team ensures residents and their families always feel respected, understood, and valued, making daily life as meaningful and comfortable as possible.
Steve S, whose husband Chris joined us at The Aldbury in July 2024, shares how our approach has positively impacted their lives.
“I had sworn before that I would never want to see Chris in a care home and it was a very difficult time when it came to considering a permanent move.
“He was originally at a different care home but had been getting steadily worse. He had some respite care at The Aldbury but after he required a hospital stay too, I knew we wouldn’t be able to bring him home again to live.
“When I first visited The Aldbury, I was able to walk round and get a feel for the place. I found the staff very friendly and smiley – not over the top or false, but genuine.
Ahead of Chris’s admission, the Home Manager Martin was so sympathetic and friendly. You suddenly get bombarded with so much information from the likes of the Alzheimer’s Society and others, but Martin made sure there was no pressure. He knew it was a such a difficult time.
“Since Chris went to The Aldbury, I have gone in every single day. Whether he is sleepy or talkative, I cherish the time we have together.
“I have become really good friends with the staff. They are always willing to go the extra mile. They make sure the residents are as happy as they can be.
“Chris is a former DJ who loves his music. He has Alexa in the lounge playing favourites such as Black Eyed Peas or Puff Daddy. When the music’s on, he will smile and dance round in his chair and enjoys it when staff pop by for a chat.
“The clinical team, the housekeepers, the companions, staff in other departments, they are all so good with him and the other residents.
“When relatives are visiting and any personal care of the resident needs to be done, it is done discreetly and professionally.
“I’m also really friendly with Chris’s fellow residents and three or four of their relatives who go in and visit.
We’ve become a closeknit house group. If one of us can’t go in for whatever reason, the others will make a point of going to see their loved one. We look out for each other.
One time Chris had finished the last of his favourite dark chocolate biscuits. By the time I went in the next day with a fresh pack, he already had some more. The daughter of a fellow resident had brought them in specially. It’s maybe a small thing but it shows how close we all are.
“Given his condition, there is no better place. I couldn’t be happier, it’s a safe environment.
You get the impression it is more of a home than a care home. I couldn’t have found anywhere better. I would not hesitate to recommend The Aldbury. It provides wonderful care.
“I feel relaxed. It has become my family environment, my social and family life. That’s all down to the staff. They are always happy to listen and chat about any concerns. I’ve also had contact with the Admiral Nurse. That’s part of the 100% reassurance I have.
“The Aldbury is a home from home. My perceptions have changed of what a care home can be. I didn’t realise before how much is done for the resident with love and attention alongside professional care. When I’m not there, I know everyone is doing their bit.
“My advice to others considering a care home is to go and visit, walk round, see and talk to people. You will get a feeling about the place. Do a respite stay first to see how your relative settles in. It might take a couple of weeks but you will know if it is right or not.”
