Celebrating St George’s Day

23 April 2024

On Tuesday, to celebrate St George’s Day and William Shakespeare’s birthday, we held an event of shared sonnet readings and a Shakespearean quiz devised by Antony.

The afternoon began with a “Match the Prop to the Play” game where residents identified which displayed objects matched which Shakespearean play; a model horse for Richard III, “My kingdom for a horse,” and a bottle of perfume representing Lady Macbeth, to name a few.

Antony and some of the residents read their favourite sonnets and passages from Shakespeare. Extracts from Richard II and Henry V were most appropriate for St George’s Day. We ended the afternoon with a quiz on Shakespeare’s plays, their locations, characters, colours, and animals.

The event was much enjoyed; it was a great opportunity for us to share our experiences of Shakespeare and our thoughts on his relevance from our schooldays until our present days. The props and books displayed proved extremely popular.

We hope to hold further Shakespeare-themed events soon.
