On one of the hottest days of the year, the team at Woodpeckers Care Home in Brockenhurst decided to take a break from the sun and cool down by engaging in a fun bread-making activity.

They chose to make Soda Bread, and what made it even more exciting was the use of unusual ingredients like rolled oats and buttermilk. Surprisingly, the recipe turned out to be simpler than expected, requiring minimal kneading. This saved them from exerting too much in the hot weather.

To start, residents combined all the dry ingredients together. Shirley took charge and slowly added the liquid part of the mixture. Once everything was well-mixed, they placed the dough in the oven. Thankfully, it didn’t take too long for our bread to bake.

Despite the heat, the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air,  and they couldn’t wait to taste their creation. With anticipation, they sliced the warm bread and spread some butter on top. The moment they took our first bite, residents were delighted. The bread was soft, flavourful, and absolutely delicious.

Although the day was sweltering, the joy of baking bread and savouring it together made it all worthwhile. It provided a refreshing break from the sun and brought the residents closer as they enjoyed the simple pleasure of homemade goodness.
