Food and dining

Meals are an important part of daily life in every Colten Care home. Each home has its own trained chef and dedicated hospitality team preparing food in the home’s kitchen every day. Many bring experience from hotels, restaurants and professional catering, and work to clear standards of presentation and service. The aim is straightforward: familiar, well-cooked meals that people look forward to.

This is everyday food, at its best. It is prepared properly, served at the right time of day and delivered with attention to detail. Residents and families can expect meals that taste good, look appealing and reflect dishes many have known throughout their lives.

How menus are planned

Fresh, seasonal ingredients

Menus are built around fresh, seasonal produce chosen for flavour and nutritional value. Trusted local suppliers provide ingredients our chefs use regularly, helping maintain quality and consistency from day to day.

Alongside seasonal options, residents can choose familiar dishes enjoyed over many years. Chefs plan menus with attention to appetite, portion size and balance, offering variety without overwhelming choice.

How dining spaces and timing work

Mealtimes arranged to support comfort

Dining rooms are arranged so residents can sit comfortably, hear conversations and see what is happening around them without feeling crowded. Mealtimes are paced to avoid rush. Teams notice who prefers a quieter space, who benefits from support nearby and who enjoys sharing a table.

Residents can eat in the dining room, a quieter area or in their own room. Families are welcome to join their loved one for meals, whether for an everyday visit or a small celebration. Private dining can be arranged when needed.

Learning what matters day to day

Understanding preferences over time

Chefs and hospitality teams take time to learn each resident’s preferences. This includes favourite flavours, portion sizes, dietary needs and smaller details such as how someone likes their tea or how much variety feels manageable.

This understanding develops through regular conversation and observation. Meals are adjusted gradually so residents remain comfortable with what is familiar while still enjoying choice.

Sample Menu

Menus are developed by our chefs in conversation with residents, reflecting familiar dishes, seasonal ingredients and individual preferences.

Three meals are prepared each day and can be enjoyed in the dining room, in a resident’s own room or with family in a private dining space. Menus are reviewed regularly and rotate through the seasons.

Coordinating food and care support

A steady partnership between kitchen and care teams

Food and dining are supported jointly by kitchen, hospitality and care teams. They share information about appetite changes, hydration, and how energy or mood may affect mealtimes.

This coordination ensures meals remain safe and enjoyable, particularly when health needs change. Adjustments are made early and without disruption.

Texture-modified and specialist diets

Maintaining quality when needs change

When additional support is required at mealtimes, the standard of the food does not change. Texture-modified dishes and fortified meals are prepared from the same fresh ingredients as the main menu so colour, flavour and presentation are retained.

Meals are plated carefully and served with attention to pace and positioning. Staff support residents so they can eat comfortably and without hurry. Quality remains consistent, even as needs evolve.

National finalists in care catering

Professional recognition

In 2025, Colten Care chefs Lorna and Jack reached the national final of the NACC Care Chef of the Year competition after winning their regional heats. The competition is widely regarded as the benchmark for excellence in care catering, assessing culinary skill, nutrition and technical execution.

Competing among the final twelve chefs in the UK, Jack received the Sustainability and Wastage Award for his innovative use of ingredients and commitment to reducing waste. Their achievement reflects the professional standards and consistency maintained across our kitchens, and the care taken to ensure residents enjoy meals prepared with skill and attention to detail every day.
