All is fair in love and Scrabble

25 April 2024

Scrabble is a slight obsession here at Woodpeckers.

It is played by many of our residents, and they absolutely love the giant Scrabble board, being able to play as a bigger group and teach fellow residents how to play with ease – they even taught the Companions!

Last year, we welcomed residents from Kingfishers for a friendly game of Scrabble, which we won. As it was such good fun, we decided to hold a rematch.

With eight residents from Woodpeckers actively playing and only five from Kingfishers, it was agreed that they would be helped by Dave, our lovely minibus driver, who joined in with Paddy Lark from Woodpeckers and our own Colten Companion Jo, along with Kingfishers Companion Team Leader Rose.

The game lasted just over an hour, and with only two letters left, Team Woodies were stumped! Team Kingfishers only had one letter – Q – which they struggled to place. Until, in the biggest show of sportsmanship, lovely June Farrow from Woodies suggested where they could place their final letter, thus giving Kingfishers the win!

Of course, now it is Woodpeckers 1 – Kingfishers 1, so we agreed to a best of three, and we look forward to welcoming Kingfishers back for the “Final.” We agreed we would have Scrabble in the garden with prizes, so watch this space!
