Learning about the garden birds

19 March 2024

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming a resident’s daughter to showcase her collection of bird nests, demonstrating that each bird is indeed an architect of its own home!

Our residents marvelled at the skills and ingenuity as the birds gathered twigs, leaves and repurposed soft materials to line their cosy abodes.

One of the most impressive nests was the complex nest of the magpie, which was domed with a side entrance.

Often the nests are constructed from twigs and sticks glued together with mud and moss.

The male is usually responsible for the gathering of the materials and the female is usually responsible for the building of the nest.

Magpies are smart and often reuse their nests year on year to save the effort of building.

It was a most enjoyable afternoon with the opportunity for our residents to view the nests up close and ask questions.
