Life at The Aldbury is shaped around how people living with dementia experience each day. Routines are consistent, spaces are easy to understand and support is available without overwhelming daily life.
The home is designed exclusively for dementia care, so the environment, meals, activities and shared spaces all work together to reduce confusion and support comfort. When daily life feels steady, residents are better able to engage with what brings enjoyment and connection.
Environments that make sense
The layout of The Aldbury is clear and intuitive, organised into smaller household groups so residents can recognise faces and surroundings more easily. Brightly coloured bedroom doors and memory boxes support wayfinding, while corridors lead naturally without dead ends.
Residents are able to walk freely within the home and use shared areas without feeling restricted. The design provides reassurance while allowing independence of movement.
Rooms may be personalised with familiar belongings, helping each space feel recognisable and comforting.
Nutritious, unhurried and understood
Meals are prepared in the home and served in relaxed, informal dining areas designed to reduce pressure. Show plates allow residents to choose visually, and colourful crockery supports contrast and recognition.
The team pays close attention to appetite, hydration and changing needs. Texture-modified meals are prepared from the same fresh ingredients as the main menu, and support is offered discreetly so dignity is maintained at all times.
Music, creativity and connection
Activities and music are shaped around the people who live at The Aldbury. The Companionship Team receives dementia-specific training so sessions are paced appropriately and designed to support wellbeing.
Music plays an important role in daily life and is guided by Colten Care’s Music and Arts Partner, Fiona Pritchard, who holds a Master’s degree in Dementia Studies with Arts and Activities. Familiar songs and small group sessions are used thoughtfully to encourage recognition, connection and calm.
Residents may join in, observe or simply enjoy being present. Participation remains a choice.
Therapeutic space within easy reach
The gardens form part of everyday life and are designed to be safe, accessible and easy to use. Paths are level, seating is well placed and planting supports interest through the seasons.
For people living with dementia, time outside can support mood, orientation and calm. Residents may walk, sit with family, tend planters or simply enjoy the change of light and air.
Music, creativity and connection
Living Well With Dementia describes how care, leadership and environment come together across Colten Care homes to protect the rhythm of daily life. Rooted in our “All About Me” philosophy, it ensures that support strengthens steadily while individuality, relationships and familiar routines remain central.
